The Groundhog.
UConn is home to a thriving colony of groundhogs. Groundhogs have many unique auditory behaviors that make them a natural choice for the lab’s mascot.
Visitors to the lab are treated to a large exhibit of groundhog-themed artwork.
Groundhog fun facts!
- Groundhogs produce an array of vocalizations including purrs, chatters, grunts, and whistles. Their alarm-like whistle has earned them the nickname whistle pig.
- The hibernating groundhog has suppressed neural responses to sound (Katbamna et al., Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, 1992).
