The Groundhog.

UConn is home to a thriving colony of groundhogs. Groundhogs have many unique auditory behaviors that make them a natural choice for the lab’s mascot.

Visitors to the lab are treated to a large exhibit of groundhog-themed artwork.

Groundhog fun facts!

• Groundhog are a marmot species that produce an array of vocalizations including purrs, chatters, grunts, and whistles.  Their alarm-like whistle has earned them the nickname whistle pig.
• Marmots have hearing ranges comparable to new world monkeys (Osmanski et al., Hearing Research, 2011)

• The hibernating groundhog has suppressed neural responses to sound  (Katbamna et al., Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, 1992).
• The Marmot Project, is the second-longest running study of individually-marked mammals. The study focuses on the anthropomorphic impact on marmots. Click here to learn more and help support this work.
